SOUL GUIDANCE
In 1993 I had what I have come to understand was a soul initiation on my first Vision Quest. Most of traditional psychology focuses almost exclusively on the dimension of ego. Primarily focused on developing ego-strength this process is helpful and important for maneuvering in the world, however, traditionally amongst spiritually advanced cultures developing the ego was never considered the stopping point of individual growth. The ego is simply our first foot hold into the social world. To develop into a whole human being requires an initiation into our soul.
In soul guidance, the soul is understood as simply our innermost essence—the most mysterious and essential core dimension of our truest self. In soul guidance a good way to understand the soul is to use the metaphor of an seed or acorn as containing our soul print. In our culture we tend to treat people more like machines than say a tree. In soul work we are asking the question, “what kind of tree am I”. If you are an oak tree, but you are trying to bear apples – you’re not going to be very happy or effective. Like the acorn that grows into an oak no matter where on the earth you plant it, our soul print tells us who we are to become. Our soul print ultimately tells us who we are, why we are here and what we are here to do. All great spiritual and wisdom traditions of the world have had an understanding of this critical dimension of our existence. What is ironic is that the word psyche in Greek literally means soul. It also meant breath and butterfly. Unfortunately, today psyche has been reduced to mean simply mental processes. At Ontos, soul guidance is a path towards reclaiming the original meaning of psyche.
In soul guidance, I am most interested in helping and fostering the soulful dimension of those I work with. At this level I see those I work with as students of life, apprenticing to their soul work and fully engaged in the discovery and living out of their soul's journey and purpose. In this way we are working on the deeper levels of mindfulness practice as well as discovering one's soul's calling (one’s greatest joy and gifts) and how to weave this into one's survival work (making a living).
This is more advanced work and primarily is focused on each person growing into their own unique individual self rather than trying to adapt or fit into the expectations of family, society or others. This is not about being better, bigger, wealthier, healthier or happier than those around us. Where life guidance has more to do with working on adjusting to our environment, soul work focuses more on connecting to our own inner most core—our uniqueness in a way to recover and connect us back to our 'soul'.
Soul guidance is not for everyone. At this level we are both co-journeyors and I am most concerned with helping the student of the soul accept themselves as who they are and gain a deeper insight into themselves. Soul work and guidance is more about entering consciously onto a spiritual path than seeking treatment for a mental health disorder.
In Soul work we work on connecting to our inner nature—which is the realm of the soul. Soul guidance draws a great deal from Jungian psychology, ancient wisdom traditions and the emerging fields of eco-psychology and soul work. For those interested in a rich, rewarding and fulfilling path towards wholeness soul guidance is such a path.
